History

Established by the aristocratic Le Sueur family from Normandy in 1739, Sea Point's origins lie in the spiritual guidance provided by François Le Sueur to Cape Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel. Originally known as Winterslust, their estate sprawled across 200 acres on Signal Hill's slopes, evolving into the suburbs of Sea Point and Fresnaye.

The name ‘Sea Point’ emerged in 1767 when Captain Cook's commander, Sam Wallis, camped in the area to avoid a smallpox epidemic in Cape Town. Growing into a residential suburb in the early 1800s, Sea Point merged with Green Point in 1839. By 1875, their joint population was 1,425, soaring to 8,839 by 1904.

The 1862 Sea Point tramline marked the area as Cape Town's first “commuter suburb," linking initially to Camps Bay. The Metropolitan and Suburban Railway Company expanded the network at the turn of the century, further cementing Sea Point's historical significance.
